	Support Discussions How to use the CMac User Guide now included with ME2006TM. - Stephen Wiebelhaus Have you ever needed your text editor to do something it can't? Some examples: Search for and remove certain strings, based on other strings. Delete the first line and 10th line from every file in a folder. Make complex modifications to each line...of a 5000 line document. Merge data files together, based on time stamps of individual lines. The above examples are too complex for even advanced regular expressions. Modifying line by line is easy to do by hand, but when you have hundreds to go through, well that's a daunting task. Yet you can write your own macro and do it simply and fast. You don't have to be a professional programmer to do it either. Multi-Edit now includes the CMac User Guide, which was previously sold as a separate product. It provides both a starting point for beginners and a huge reference section for the experienced programmer making it simply easy to begin using macros. 247 pages packed with explanations and examples to learn from, pick apart, add together, or revise quickly. CMac macros are similar in syntax to the C programming language so the syntax will be familiar. Using CMac macros you can create custom logical search and replace procedures, dialog boxes, output messages, convert tabs to spaces (with logical placement rules), and much, much more. Below are some examples from the CMac User Guide showing how easy programming with CMac can be. I am referencing the page numbers from Adobe Reader, which you can just type in at the bottom, and it will then take you to the page number. I am not using the numbers embedded into the pdf page. The code shown below is taken from "Making a dialog box", page 66 of the CMac User Guide. This example is simply getting input from the user.   In chapter 7, on page 72 you'll find step by step instructions on how to build tabbed dialogs. This chapter goes into a lot more detail than I can show here. Pages 78-85 provide you a complete list of all 569 bitmap icons included in Multi-Edit. Use within your macros if you'd like. Chapter 8, page 86 presents more advanced dialog controls, such as radio buttons and list boxes.   The CMac language includes the following features and many more. Variable types (Chapter4, page 52): Integers, Real Numbers, Characters, Strings, and Booleans with local and global scope. Parameters and returns (Chapter 3, page 46) may be passed by reference or value. Methods can be loaded into memory and dumped (page 25), or kept in memory for later use, so you can optimize how you use them. Logic and loops (Chapter 5, page 58): for, if...else if, while, do...while, switch...case, continue, break, and branching. Those can pack in a lot of power for selectively modifying text and data manipulation. The CMac User Guide also explains how to use many of the common Multi-Edit internal methods and variables (Chapter 10-12, pages 102-199), so you can just add your functionality on top of what's already there, without reinventing the wheel.
